We have officially had our first litter of puppies!
When Cali got pregnant we figured her due date would be somewhere around April 21, and she was right on time. On the 20th she started to show signs, so all day the next we watched as she made it clear she was ready to get those puppies out. At about 6:15, she started trying to have the first one. At 6:30, she was a mom. Puppy Number One was healthy and out!
We were with her the entire time, anxiously awaiting the next puppy. We had her get an x-ray, and the vet said he could definitively see six puppies, was pretty sure there was a seventh, and thought there might be more, but not that he could see. After Cali’s seventh puppy, we were happy to have had seven healthy puppies and took her outside. Oops! Puppy Number Eight was born on our patio (in my hands, technically, since I caught it) and we hurried back inside. We were a little more patient and decided to wait and be sure she was done after the first mistake. Good thing, as she had one last girl to deliver, bringing her total to nine puppies (six boys and three girls).
We got them all cleaned up and in with her, where she started to nurse them right away. She’s a natural mama. They nursed and slept through the night and all were happy and healthy when we checked on them again in the morning. We’re keeping the room at 85 degrees to make sure the puppies stay warm and healthy. It’s been a great experience and one we’ll never forget.
We decided to wait until they were a day old to weigh them. They were all a healthy size and looking great after a day of nursing. They’re being bathed in love by their mom as well as our family.
We decided to wait until they were here to put the word out that we had healthy puppies, but now it’s bitter-sweet to post about them. I think we’d rather keep all nine and never let anyone know we had puppies, but we’ll settle for keeping just one.
That means eight are available, so contact us if you are interested in adding one of these sweet labs to your home.
